About North Weald Airfield 1916 - 2016
North Weald Airfield is a genuine WW1 airfield with many of its original buildings intact and it is at this wonderful venue that the Wings and Wheels Model Spectacular will hold the 34th event in 2021.
It's hard to believe that one hundred years ago an airfield that was used by the Royal Flying Corps in 1916 provides the same venue for what is the longest running model show in the UK. Those young WW1 pilots could never have imagined the changes that would take place in the world of aviation, let alone the fact that one day it would be possible to fly a model aeroplane at speeds they could only dream of and all controlled by a man on the ground holding a radio control transmitter!
Such is progress! And that progress is more than represented in the range of models on display, every era and type of model aircraft will be flown throughout the weekend from WW1 biplanes to the very latest fast jets. On the ground there will be every variation of radio control vehicles including trucks, tanks and model boats being put through their paces.
Couple this with a row of model Traders offering something to satisfy the most ardent of modellers, along with a giant Bring and Buy, there is more than ample opportunity to pick up a bargain!

Map & Directions
Road Directions
Junction 7 on the M11 motorway is some 2 miles away and so road access to the M25 and north east London is excellent. Immediate access to the airfield is via the A414, with Chelmsford less than 20 miles to the east and Harlow a short distance to the west. Do bear in mind that the Saturday Market on the airfield generates a lot of traffic in its own right and the approaches to the airfield can be quite slow between about 0930 and 1200 on the SATURDAY ONLY. If possible try to time your journey to arrive before or after this time to promote relaxation and good Karma!
Postcode CM16 6AR, Entrance gate Lat/Long 51 43' 43"N 000 09' 37"E
Once you approach the airfield, follow the yellow AA signs and Wings & Wheels Entrance signs for pinpoint entrance to the showground. Please follow all direction signs carefully since these have been designed to get you into and out of the showground as quickly and efficiently as possible
Public Transport Directions
By Rail:
The nearest railway stations are in Harlow, with London Underground's Central Line terminating 2 miles away in Epping. It is advisable to take a taxi to the show from there and taxis should enter the showground rather than drop off on the main road since this causes traffic congestion and can be dangerous.
By Commercial Airline:
London Stansted on the M11 is 14 miles to the north and hosts many airlines including Ryan Air, Easy Jet and Air Berlin among other budget and low cost companies.
By Private Aviation
North Weald Airfield is an unlicensed aerodrome. Stapleford Aerodrome is the nearest licenced site some 7 miles away. Pilots wishing to arrive at North Weald by air may do so at specific times throughout the weekend. Contact the operations office on 01992 564200 or Fax: 01992 523054. On arrival at North Weald you can request transport across the airfield to the show at a nominal cost of £5 return, giving a total show entrance fee of £15 for adults and £11 for children aged 5 - 15yrs. Please be patient and allow up to about half an hour for transport to arrive.
