About
Abridge is part of Lambourne Parish Council.
Abridge sits alongside the River Roding and is named for the bridge that crosses it, marked on maps as far back as 1576. The village has built up around this important river crossing point on the stagecoach route from London to Chipping Ongar and beyond. Important buildings at the heart of the old part of Abridge include the early 19th century Blue Boar Inn (now a boutique hotel), the late medieval Roding House and the 18th century Maltsters Arms.
On the edge of the village is a very impressive village hall built recently on land stretching down to the river where a very popular annual village show takes place. Further out of the village is Mayhem Paintball with a site that is highly regarded and attracts players from London and further afield. Immediately next-door is Stapleford Airfield offering private, pleasure and business flying plus pilot tuition and all the services that go with a busy airfield. Stapleford had been created as “Essex Airport” in 1833 by the airline entrepreneur Edward Hillman and rivalled Abridge Aerodrome operated by Commercial Airways established on a site of even earlier pioneers of flying at Piggots Farm.
