About
The Crofton Singers
We are a four part choir usually meeting Thursday evenings during term times at Bancroft’s School in Woodford. We sing a variety of unaccompanied pieces under the tuition of our professional conductor Jonathan Rathbone. We are very pleased to contribute to this Cultural Festival, sadly not live in person, but virtually through recordings that we have put onto youtube.
Links for five items are given below to give an indication of what we sing:
'Music for a while shall all your cares beguile'
1. Recorded in isolation 2020 is an original arrangement by our Musical Director Jonathan Rathbone of ‘Music for a while shall all your cares beguile’ by Henry Purcell (1659-95).
‘Music, when soft voices die, vibrates in the memory’
2. Charles Wood (1866-1926) setting of Shelley’s poem ‘Music, when soft voices die, vibrates in the memory’. Recorded live in the Chapel of Bancoft’s School, Woodford Green.
3. Jonathan Rathbone’s choral arrangement of the song ‘Zip-a Dee-Doo-Dah’ composed in 1946 by Allie Wrubel with lyrics by Ray Gilbert for the Disney film ‘Song of the South’. Recorded live in the Chapel of Bancoft’s School, Woodford Green.
Earlier live recordings on youtube include the following two pieces conducted by Simon Pusey in 2017 at the choir’s 70th Anniversary concert in London’s Drapers’ Hall:
‘Sing we and chant it while love doth grant it’
4. An English madrigal by Thomas Morley (1558-1602) ‘Sing we and chant it while love doth grant it’
5. A choral arrangement by Pat Shaw (1917-1977) of the traditional English dance tune ‘Dick’s Maggot’
