About this talk:
Essex was at the forefront of aviation from the start with early landing grounds in the west of the county. Pioneers like Piggotts built early machines and are still to be found trading in the district, although no longer in aviation their products include marquees linking back to the earliest days of flying, making military marquees for housing aircraft. During the first World War, airfields on hWest Essex soil were a new sight - built to defend London from the new terror of bombing, first from airships and then aircraft. The Second World War saw the Battle of Britain fought from West Essex airfields and then the arrival of the American bomber groups. And between the wars and since, West Essex has been important in the development of commerical aviation and air travel.
Other talks in the Calm & Courageous series include: Lippitts Hill Camp (Wednesday 13th April), The 397th Bombardment Group at Willingale (Wednesday 21st May) and Plunder: 80 Years Since VE Day (Wednesday 28th May).
