About
Royal Gunpowder Mills Dusk Woodland Wildlife Safari
Saturday 9th September 2023
6pm - 9.30pm
Tickets are £25 per person.
Location: Beaulieu Drive, Waltham Abbey, EN9 1JY
Embark on a thrilling journey through the lush greenery of the Royal Gunpowder Mills woodland at dusk. Expert guides will lead you on an immersive experience, where you'll encounter a variety of fascinating wildlife species. Designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, the site provides a variety of habitats including a derelict factory site, open grassland, woodland and waterways.
As you walk along the scenic trails, keep your eyes peeled for our many nesting bird species and listen to the soothing melodies of their songs. Don't forget to bring your binoculars and camera!
After the initial tour, you will return to base for refreshments and then be taken on a trip round again to see and hear the activity after dark. Because the animals are living wild its not possible to promise an appearance from all but you are likely to see a good selection. On previous watches after dark, visitors have seen Fallow deer, Muntjack deer, Badgers, Foxes and Owls. Part of the excitement is not knowing what you are going to see when, and knowing it is a privilege when the animals do make an appearance.
So, mark your calendars for an unforgettable evening in the heart of nature. Don't miss this opportunity to wonder at the creatures who make the Royal Gunpowder Mills their home, hunting ground, grazing area and playground.
Please note that it is essential for participants to stay calm, patient and quiet throughout the tour.
Refreshments will be served halfway through the evening but please bring a packed lunch if you think you'll be hungry! The cafe will not be open.
Adults and over 14s only
Restricted to just 12 participants
Pre-visit information will be sent after booking to help you get the most out of your ‘safari’.

- Forest Location - The large site includes unique Alder plantation and associated wildlife. The whole site can be visited by the Land Train or Military Truck Experience.
- In town/city centre - The site is on the outskirts of Waltham abbey, itself a historic market town.
- Indoor Attraction - The main exhibition, armoury and rocket collection, plus Professor Nitrates Mad Lab are all indoors.
- Outdoor Attraction - The Royal Gunpowder Mills is a very large unspoilt site with areas designated of special scientific interest (SSIs). The dangerous nature of gunpowder manufacture, and the later chemical explosives, made it sensible to space buildings apart. So the industrial processes can be explored within a natural environment. Trees were allowed to flourish between the buildings as they provided an additional safety barrier should an explosion occur in a building, and canals link all parts of the site.
