About
Beginners Traditional Building Skills Course at the Royal Gunpowder Mills
Weekend of July 13th and 14th
Welcome to the first of Traditional Building Skills Courses to be hosted at the Royal Gunpowder Mills! The courses aim to raise awareness of the importance of protecting historic buildings by using appropriate methods and materials to repair and conserve them.
This two day (weekend) course is aimed at beginners who would like to learn how to use lime mortars, and how to tackle areas of repointing and bricks that are spalling.
The course will be run at the Waltham Abbey Royal Gunpowder Mills, where there are a number of brick features, in various states of repair, demonstrating a range of issues that can be found within historic brick buildings.
The course will be led by Mac Knox-Weir. Mac us one of the highest qualified bricklayers in the UK, and has spent over 40 years working with brickwork, including the repair of historic buildings. His experience includes work on many of the Royal Palaces, including Hampton Court, where he has been responsible for repairing and rebuilding sections of specialist brickwork.
No previous experience necessary.
The course is run by Place Services, a heritage service at Essex County Council. Price: £235. For the skills you gain in conserving the brickwork of your treasured property over two days with such a specialist this is an unbeatable price.

- Forest Location - The large site includes unique Alder plantation and associated wildlife. The whole site can be visited by the Land Train or Military Truck Experience.
- In town/city centre - The site is on the outskirts of Waltham abbey, itself a historic market town.
- Indoor Attraction - The main exhibition, armoury and rocket collection, plus Professor Nitrates Mad Lab are all indoors.
- Outdoor Attraction - The Royal Gunpowder Mills is a very large unspoilt site with areas designated of special scientific interest (SSIs). The dangerous nature of gunpowder manufacture, and the later chemical explosives, made it sensible to space buildings apart. So the industrial processes can be explored within a natural environment. Trees were allowed to flourish between the buildings as they provided an additional safety barrier should an explosion occur in a building, and canals link all parts of the site.
